Freeman Family Nights

On December 16 Freeman staff will host our second annual Family Reading Night for Freeman families. Our theme "Snuggle Up with a Good Book" describes the grade level book selections to be highlighted with staff members reading these books and demonstrating effective strategies for parent-child read alongs. The Freeman chorus will provide musical selections to go along with the pizza supper that will be shared with families. As with our Family Math Night, we hope this event is an opportunity to further our home-school connections.

Freeman at its finest

Visits to Freeman on Monday through Friday of last week by community persons and Wake County educators provided the opportunity for them to get a first hand look at our magnet program. On Friday, Dr. Lerch, NHCS superintendent, observed the 5th grade Mindstorms Challenge in action - GE engineers overseeing the robotic competition with students supporting each other in the race to determine which team built the "best" robot. Through the entire week, staff and students demonstrated their commitment to an educational program that puts 21st Century learning and student success as top priority. Community awareness will continue to climb; our collaboration with the new engineering magnet school in Wake County will enable Freeman's staff to support the statewide growth of the engineering design process in the elementary curriculum. Freeman continues to lead the way!

Rainy Days

We arrived at school this morning under torrential rain clouds. It would have been a perfect day for lying in bed. But Freeman staff members were right there to welcome ""wet" children into the hallways, cafeteria, and classrooms. You could tell that the children appreciated the care and consideration since some had stood in the rain waiting for the bus and arrived with soggy clothing. It makes me proud to be a Freeman bear.

The PBS committee meeting on Tuesday provided the opportunity to talk about our positive behavior support program and its directions in the coming months. The committee will be meeting monthly on the fourth Wednesday of the month in keeping with our plans to have school meetings on Wednesdays. I hope you can join the meeting next month to provide your input in the positive directions that we want to move into within our school environment. We have made many productive steps towards improving staff and student relationships. My personal thanks to Sally and the committee for their motivation and enthusiasm.
